Are you ready to escape the grid?

Rainbow over the mountains

Happy Equinox! The days are getting shorter and the rains have finally arrived here in the high desert outside Taos. As the season shifts, I’m experiencing a lot of internal movement. How is it for you?

Today, I’m sharing about my unconventional, off-grid house. Lately, I’ve realized how blessed Russ and I are that we were guided here. Living off grid was not the plan. Or at least not consciously. But I believe it was our soul’s plan.

I have a new theory - that escaping the grid is a pathway to escaping the false matrix (my term for the web of deception & manipulation around us).

Living here is such a gift. It’s grounding. It’s connecting. It’s beautiful.

By day, the Rocky Mountains are a constant reminder of the beauty of creation. By night, the huge open skies - where you can see the Milky Way on a clear night - is a reminder of how vast the universe is - and how small my personal problems are.

Off-grid, there’s a deep connection to the rhythm of nature. On solar, our life is directly impacted by cloudy days (no clothes washing or hair drying!) vs. full sun days when our batteries are fully charged (literally and also figuratively).

With no water hook-up, catching rain in barrels to water the garden, going to the community well for our water - it’s a constant reminder of how precious water is.

My favorite thing about this house is that it’s made with straw bales inside wood framing. Straw bales are very thick and provide incredible insulation - so it’s always the right temperature - and they give the walls a beautiful rounded quality that feels feminine and nurturing.

The main space was built in the shape of an octagon. In the middle is a tree. Well, it’s a log. Occasionally, I give it a big hug and let the house know I love it.

While there are forces trying to push us into 15-minute cities, I believe in the future, more of us will live this way. As we remember the sacredness of the land and the waters, nature, the land guardians, ourselves and our Mother-Father God.
